The Basics (But Not Boring)

Issue #1:

🩺 Health is for EveryBODY ™ Because health doesn’t have to be boring.

The Building Blocks of Health: You Can’t Hack What You Haven’t Built

You know the basics. Sleep like a human, move like you’ve got joints, hydrate like your kidneys depend on it (because, spoiler, they do), and eat something green that wasn’t made in a factory. So why does wellness still feel like assembling IKEA furniture without the manual (or the tiny Allen wrench)?

Maybe we’re just overcomplicating it. Here’s your refresher course in Being a Human 101, powered by common sense and backed by the CDC.

Let’s get back to the foundation:

Sleep: 7–9 hours. Yes, even if you “function fine” on 5. Your brain, heart, and skin filed a complaint.Move: 150 minutes a week. That’s 21.4 minutes a day. Round up to 22. You’ve scrolled for longer.Water: Half your body weight in ounces. More if you sweat like a sauna or live somewhere hotter than your ex’s take on politics.Food: Plants > processed. Real > perfect. No need to forage or ferment (unless you’re into that).

Start here. We’ll talk hacks later.

🧠Simple Health Hacks That Don’t Involve Buying a $400 Blender

Walk while you talk: Every Zoom or phone call = free steps.Eat protein first: Not magic. Just science.Pre-decide dinner: Avoid the 5:30 p.m. fridge abyss.Put your vitamins by your toothbrush: Stack your habits.Bonus: Call your mom. That counts as heart health.

Fiber → Protein → Carbs. Less crash, more energy, better vibes.

🧬Spotlight on a Disease:

Lupus – The Sneaky One with a Supervillain Name

Of Note: May is Lupus Awareness Month

What it is: Lupus is an autoimmune disease—your immune system goes rogue and attacks your own tissues.

Who it affects: Mostly women, especially Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Indigenous women aged 15–44.

Symptoms: Fatigue, joint pain, butterfly-shaped rash, brain fog, chest pain.

Treatment: Steroids, anti-inflammatories, antimalarials, lifestyle changes.

Myths: No, celery juice and crystals won’t cure it. Yes, it’s real—even if someone “doesn’t look sick.”

Positive Affirmation: “My body is fighting hard, and I’m learning how to fight smart.”

Respectful Joke: Lupus is like your body’s mean girl. “Oh, you thought today was going to be easy? Think again.”

📺 Binge-Worthy Health on Screen

Watch: "Diagnosis" on Netflix. It unpacks real medical mysteries and highlights the complexities of autoimmune disease—like Lupus. Smart, human, and deeply empathetic.
